Black Minstrel Shows in Nineteenth Century ��ɫ������վÊ»i

Dr. Allison E. Paynter is an Associate Professor of English and Coordinator of the English Department at Chaminade University of Honolulu. She is a performance poet and a budding actor who has been featured at venues in London, Edinburgh, New York, and Honolulu. Dr. Paynter teaches and publishes academic papers on a range of topics which include Women’s Literature with a focus on science fiction and fantasy, Victorian Literature and Poetry, Vodou in Haiti, 19th century African American and Caribbean women’s literature, and representations of the “Black" body in pop culture.

In this talk, I will outline briefly black minstrel shows in 19th and 20th century America, then discuss Ernest Hogan’s intriguing lawsuit against the SS Miowera, one of the few successful cases against race discrimination heard in ��ɫ������վÊ»i.
