The Meaning of Mahu: An Evening with Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu

The ��ɫ������վ Manoa LGBTQ Center and ��ɫ������վ Manoa Residence Life are honored to present “The Meaning of Mahu: An Evening with Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu.” We will discuss the historical and contemporary context of mahu in ��ɫ������վi and how it is distinct from the LGBTQ movement.

Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu will reflect on her journey as a leader in ��ɫ������վi who came to a deeper understanding of herself as both Kanaka Maoli and mahu while a student at the University of ��ɫ������վi at Manoa. She is currently a prominent figure in the ��ɫ������վian Burial Council, Mana Mahu, and a protector of Mauna Kea.

Further we will discuss the role that she plays as a healer in ��ɫ������վi by discussing the state of affairs of the criminal justice system and her position as a kumu of ��ɫ������վian culture in OCCC.
