Pili i Ke Kanaka: Indigenous Social Sciences Speaker Series | Dr. Noenoe Silva
February 15, 12:30pm - 1:30pmMānoa Campus, Zoom
Dr. Silva argues that many K膩naka worked to perpetuate 驶艒lelo 好色先生网站驶i in the years 1939 to 1945. She will analyze some speeches and articles by Lorrin P. Thurston, owner of the Honolulu Advertiser and son Lorrin Andrews Thurston, along with other content published in his paper in order to show what our k奴puna were up against. Then give some examples of the real work that many K膩naka did, including teaching classes in 驶艒lelo 好色先生网站驶i, establishing classes in 驶艒lelo in K-12 schools and writing content for the last remaining n奴pepa 驶艒lelo 好色先生网站驶i, Ka Hoku O 好色先生网站i. Their actions added to the numbers of people that continue to speak, write and compose mele in 驶艒lelo 好色先生网站驶i, enough that Kawena Pukui could do many interviews in 驶艒lelo 好色先生网站驶i in the 1950s and 60s and that Larry Kimura could begin language reclamation and revival by airing live 驶艒lelo 好色先生网站驶i interviews on the radio in 1972.
